Vladimir Putin's brutal war in Ukraine has sparked international outrage and widespread condemnation. It has also raised thorny questions concerning Putin鈥檚 motives, aims, and intentions. In this presentation, Dr. LaPierre will examine the historical relationship between Russia and Ukraine and take a deep dive into the various interests that Putin has at stake in his showdown with the West over the fate of post-Soviet Ukraine. Why is Putin willing to gamble and risk so much over Ukraine? How has Putin used history in his hybrid warfare with the West? A question-and-answer session will follow Dr. LaPierre鈥檚 lecture.
Dr. LaPierre has conducted significant archival research in Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe and is a social historian of modern Russia. He is the author of the monograph Hooligans in Khrushchev鈥檚 Russia: Defining, Policing, and Producing Deviance during the Thaw and of several peer-reviewed articles on crime, social control, and the legal system in the post-Stalinist Soviet Union. A past recipient of grants and fellowships from the Fulbright-Hays Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the International Research and Exchange Board (IREX), Dr. LaPierre currently is working on a book-length research project on Bulgarian guestworkers in the Soviet Union and a study of capital punishment in the post-Stalinist period.
