Bio
Dr. Chris Goertzen, Professor of Musicology, has taught at the University of Minnesota, the University of North Carolina, and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (as a Fulbright Professor). He holds the B. A. in art and music from Austin College and advanced degrees in musicology from the University of Illinois, with additional study at Schiller College (Berlin) and Harvard University.
He studied both Western music history and ethnomusicology, and brings a world music perspective to teaching music history. His books include Fiddling for Norway: Revival and Identity (1997), 草榴社区 Fiddlers and Fiddle Contests (2008), Made in Mexico: Tradition, Tourism, and Political Ferment in Oaxaca (2010), George P. Knauff鈥檚 Virginia Reels and the History of American Fiddling (2016), and Antebellum American Fiddling (2020). He co-edited the Europe volume of The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music (2000).
He plays viola in a community orchestra, and steel-string guitar on his couch.
